Great British Bake off

Our Friend Doreen Brown featured in the episode of the popular BBC programme on 17/9/2013 making Tottenham Cake, first popularised by Quaker baking family, the Chalkleys, and still on sale locally.  You can find more about Tottenham Cake here and can view the clip of the programme on YouTube.  You might even catch a glimpse of our Meeting House as well.  You can also see the recipe on the Haringey Council website.

I watched the Bake Off programme last week and was delighted to see Doreen Brown, a lady who I met as a child, 50 years ago, when I, and my twin sister Ruth, used to accompany our parents, Alan and Marie Green, to Winchmore Hill Meeting House. It brought back memories of my time there and also of Doreen’s children. I recognised her immediately – she hasn’t changed a bit!

Interestingly, at the same time, my Aunt Moira, who lived in Palmers Green, and who was also a Quaker but did not attend, would always make sponge cake when we visited, with ‘pink icing’. I have to say we longed for the day when she might just make it with a different colour icing!!

Please send my very best wishes to Doreen, if you are able to. Katharine (Green) Now Moffatt

Katharine, lovely to hear from you. I remember your parents well and hope they were able to watch the programme too. Doreen was an absolute star and we as a Meeting are very proud of her. I will pass your message on to her and she will be pleased to get it I’m sure.

Hi, I saw Doreen Brown on the British Bake-off and wondered if she is the same Mrs Brown that worked as a teacher at Bounds Green Junior school?
