Sour note from Manchester

Sometimes you hear something you find hard to believe.  A Christian preacher was detained for nineteen hours without food or medication following allegations he had harassed two gay teens.

Going by reports I have seen, the teens approached him, asked him a question, didn’t like his answer, kissed in front of him and then called the police. (His view that homosexuality is always sinful may be disagreeable but scarcely harassment when the individuals approached him and in effect, started the argument.) The matter appeared to be resolvable there and then on the street.  Unless there is some significant fact which is not reported, this was heavy handed and unnecessary.

The preacher will now receive substantial compensation from the police.  A free society needs a thick skin, we need laws against actual harassment and hate speech which puts people in fear of their safety, but these not to be deployed just against unpopular views.
